Yesterday we looked at atheist dictators and the sheer amount of bloodshed caused by their ruthlessness. As I pointed out them, not all atheists resort to such methods and many are very kind people, but there is something inside a person who is so bent on denying the possibility of a supreme being. In America such atrocities haven’t erupted from the 0.7% of atheists, but they haven’t been friendly neighbors of Christians either.

Most recently the American’s United for Separation of Church from State have filed a motion in Federal Court in an effort to deny rights to the new life-size Noah’s Ark that Answers in Genesis is building in Kentucky. In brief, since AIG is a non-profit organization those who buy tickets to the exhibit can get a percentage of the admission price back on their taxes. It’ similar to being able to take donations to your church or charities as a tax deduction. The AU wants to deny AIG customers this Constitutional right. For all the details on this case see the video here.

AU isn’t the only atheist group trying to undermine religious freedom, particularly for Christians. The Freedom from Religion Foundation brings lawsuits against state and city governments to remove monuments with religious symbols and against churches to remove nativity scenes from their lawns. I ran into one of their people at the Colorado People’s Fair around 1990. He was wearing a button with the word “Religion” on it, with a red circle and diagonal slash over it. I approached him and said, “That’s a very religious button you’re wearing.” He stopped and took a step back. “It is not!” he replied. “It’s anti-religious!” I explained myself more clearly for him, “It’s making a statement about religion, so it’s religious. Isn’t it great to live in a country where you can proudly wear your religious beliefs on a button?” We had an interesting conversation.

Both these groups use lies and half-truths to accomplish their social goals, and we saw just how dangerous that is last week.

Unfortunately it’s not just big national organizations that are attempting to stifle Christianity. The Colorado chapter of Atheists and Free Thinkers used to print their newsletter at the copy shop I worked at in Lakewood, Colorado. The president of the chapter and I would have very civil conversations, but from the newsletter I learned about the pressure they tried to apply to government officials and organizations like the Boy Scouts. I don’t know how true it is of most atheists, but this man’s story is that he was a former Christian minister. Heartbreaking, I know.

The point is evil takes many forms but few are as ruthless as denying the existence of God. Such a philosophy is devoid of any moral foundation and can be used to justify any amount of evil, from the local to the global level.
