All this week we have been introducing the concept of apologetics and comparing it to martial arts. The analogy is a good one, both require learning, practice and experience to master. Furthermore, the techniques at the early stages are helpful to everyone, while the more advanced are useful only to those committed to the lifestyle. Today I’ll outline a course of study that will be beneficial to every believer, from those who simply want to live a peaceful life according to Romans 12.18 and to those who want to go on the offensive for God’s kingdom as per 2 Timothy 1.12-14:
Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day. Hold to the standard of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Protect that good thing entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
Martial Arts have nine belts, 3 belts for each of three distinct levels. Stage one has white, yellow and orange belts and represent the basics of self-defense suitable for daily living. The second stage is where mastering the skills begins to take place and the belts earned are green, blue and purple. Stage three is represented by brown, red and black belts and refines the student’s skills further until they are second nature. In other words, beginner, intermediate and advanced. The following chart breaks down these three categories and suggests materials for training at each level.
