LazarusSaturday large

Within two weeks of Jesus’s death he had performed his greatest miracle to date: the raising of Lazarus from death. Was this miracle a foreshadowing of his power over death and the grave? Most certainly. Even so the disciples completed missed the meaning as, after Jesus’ crucifixion, each would go their own way bereaving the death of their Rabbi. We’re getting ahead of the story, however.

John makes clear (John 11.38-12.11) that this is the event that was the tipping point of Jesus’ life and of all history. For Jesus’ fame increased so rapidly after Lazarus emerged from his tomb -- completely restored to health and life -- that hundreds, perhaps thousands believed Jesus to be the Messiah. There was another result of this event, however, one much darker and insidious. The event inspired the religious leaders to finally make arrangements to kill Jesus.

Jesus left the village shortly thereafter, knowing many would come looking for him there. He traveled for a few days, never staying in a city longer than one night, before returning to the home of Lazarus. On this day, the day before Jesus’ prophesied entry into Jerusalem, he had supper with his friend.

Today many Orthodox Christians celebrate by weaving palm fronds into the shape of crosses in anticipation of Palm Sunday (tomorrow). How will you prepare for the Kings triumphant entry? After all, it was not merely a triumphal entry of a city, but an event that lead to Jesus’ ability to triumphantly enter your heart.

If possible, celebrate with friends and family. Dine and reflect on the resurrection of Lazarus and of the Savior. Read of the account in John and meditate on its meaning not only at the time, but its meaning to your life today. After all, were it not for Jesus’ power over the grave we would all still be lost in our sins.
