Continuing our elaboration on last weeks post, we turn to the issue of abortion. While a divisive subject in our culture, most Christians believe abortion is murder. Back in the early 1970's when the landmark Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade was passed, ignorance of the state of the child was somewhat forgivable. The science was just not there to prove what a fetus was at the various stages of development. After, only a hundred years before Charles Darwin was populating the myth that the human embryo would cycle through its entire evolutionary development before birth.

Last week we issued a challenge: "If I say the word "abortion" what words immediately jump into your mind? Roe v. Wade? Fetus? Tissue? How about: "Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” And [Jesus] placed his hands on them and went on his way" (Matthew 19.14-15)." The point of that exchange was to remove the topic from its political trappings and to allow us to see it from God's perspective. Regardless of the science involved, abortion keeps children from being born and, therefore, keeps them from coming to Jesus as he desires.

While God's perspective is the only one that matters, that doesn't mean science is irrelevant. The science backs up God's perspective, and is useful when trying to convince others who do not know or trust God. While we may have been blind to human development inside the womb in the 1970's, we aren't any longer. Today we know exactly how a human child develops — and it is identifiable as a human child before most women even know they are pregnant. Most museums, including the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, have displays proving as much.

While the science is definitive, I wouldn't argue from the science alone. Even when having discussions with athiests I always try to argue from God's perspective and use Scripture to back up my opinions. It may not mean anything to them at the time, but providing the wisdom of God often yields interesting returns. As Proverbs 26.4 teaches: "Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you yourself also be like him." Never allow an enemy of God's truth to dictate what forms of truth we can argue from.
