"Media" used to mean "print media" like books and newspapers, but the world has grown. Today media can also mean radio, television and movies delivered to personal computers, tablets and cell phones. As the world's best selling book of all time the Bible continues to make headlines, both good and bad, across all forms of media. A California city tries to tax a local church in violation of state and federal laws and the Church of Latter-Day Saints is dropping the use of the word "Mormon" in hopes of gaining more religious credibility.

Disobeying federal immigration law wasn't enough for California, as we've reported before the state is now making a move against the US Constitution by limiting speech regarding homosexuality and, in a new move, is making an attempt to tax local churches. The city of San Rafael is testing the waters by extending the tax for paramedic services to churches as a kind of special property tax, Valley Baptist Church isn't having any of it and is being represented by PJI looking to have the city's tax declared invalid. Should the church lose the lawsuite one can expect this kind of thing to increase across the state. The purpose of churches being tax-exempt is to show that the church is not under the government, one of the very reasons for this country's origins. We'll try to keep track of this and let you know what happens.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, usually referred to as the Mormon Church, is dropping the use of the word "Mormon" from all their literature in order to convince people that they are merely a sect of Christianity and not a separate religion. Chris Thomas, a Salt Lake City public relations expert, told a local newspaper that by dropping the word "Mormon" the church is then on equal footing with Christian denominations and affords them the opportunity to “emphasize its doctrine, mission and foundation as being Christian.” But is that true? I think any Christian can figure out the answer to that question with a few basic facts:

  • The LDS does not believe in the Trinity
  • The LDS does not believe Jesus is the only son of God
  • The LDS has their own Bible which contradicts much of what is in the both the Jewish and Christian Scriptures
  • The LDS is a religion of works rather than a religion of grace

Clearly they are a religion of their own design and not a sect or denomination of Christianity.
