Back in June we looked at two legal cases that were supposed injustices and gaining a lot of attention on Facebook and Twitter. We discovered at the time that one of those cases was just indeed, but the other quite the opposite. That later case is the affair of Brock Turner, a 20-year-old college student who was arrested for raping several girls on campus. During the course of trying the case the charges were reduced to three charges of sexual assault. The convictions carried a possible 14 years in prison. He was convicted on all counts but received a six-month sentence, three of which are to be probation.

Turner just finished serving those three months and was released from prison last Friday, September 2, 20016.

“The predatory offender has failed to take responsibility, failed to show remorse and failed to tell the truth. The sentence does not factor in the true seriousness of this sexual assault, or the victim’s ongoing trauma.” – District Attorney Jeff Rosen

Clearly the Stanford student got off easy for his heinous crimes – at least from the justice system. Neighbors of his are protesting his presence in their neighborhood.

It seems that the people of California may have more wisdom than their political and judicial leadership. The judge in the case has moved from criminal to civil court and is facing a group trying to recall his election. A group of 40-some law professors have signed a document in an attempt to protect the judge from recall, stating that the judiciary should not be looking over their shoulder when making decisions about a verdict. It is our contention at Think-Biblically.com that neither should they make those decisions in the absence of accountability.

Furthermore, Californians passed a bill with minimum sentencing requirements for sexual assault cases in reaction to this case, but it is uncertain if the Governor will sign it into law. We applaud their efforts and pray for success on both counts.
